Mi-Jeong Lee is an artist, curator, and researcher in art and culture. Lee experiments with an aesthetics of movement in the development of new expressive forms based on the materials of everyday life. These aesthetic philosophies are examined in her PhD dissertation, “Horizon Aesthetics: Affect, Foreignness, East-West in Hong Sang Soo’s film In Another Country.”
Lee worked as a journalist and writer in Seoul before moving to Montreal in 1993; since then she has been exploring the cultural, social and political influence of geographical mobility on communities and individuals. Lee works in both Seoul and Montreal, and her most recent installation, Passage Seoul-Montreal, which combines a video and typical Korean textiles, was commissioned by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h for an exhibition of Korean contemporary jewelry art exploring the theme Sarangbang. This exhibition will travel to other Canadian galleries for one year. Lee’s previous work includes the multidisciplinary installations The Body That Hums, Ungnyeo’s Cave (2018) and Plus qu’ici et là (2014). Her short films and videos include I am the Park and Façades. As part of her scholarly work, Lee is leading the book project, “Revisiting Hong Sang Soo” (working title) which will be launched in late 2020 at the Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montréal.
Lee is an invited scholar at the Sense Lab (Concordia University) and a PhD Candidate at the Visual and Media Arts School at Université du Québec à Montréal. She is the founder of Ciné-Asie, a film and media non-profit organization (the Korean Film Festival Canada, the AmérAsia Film Festival). Lee has received support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada Council for the Arts, CALQ, and the Korea Foundation.
